How to improve your English writing skills, in 10 minutes a day

You don't need a course or a grammar book. You need your own sent messages, a notebook, and ten minutes.

The fastest way to improve your English writing skills is to practise on what you already write: your own emails and work messages. Every day, spend 10 minutes rereading one message you sent, fixing it, rewriting it, and noting the mistake you made. Most people repeat the same few mistakes, so fixing your own does more than studying general rules.

Grammar books teach everything. Your writing only needs the parts you get wrong. This routine is built for working adults who write in English at work, in India, the Philippines, Latin America, Brazil or anywhere else, and who don't have an hour a day to study.

The 10-minute routine

Do it at the same time every day: on the bus, with your morning tea, or before you close your laptop.

Minutes 1–3: Reread one message you sent yesterday

Open your sent emails or a work chat and pick one message of three sentences or more. Read it slowly, as if you were the person who received it. Ask:

  • Is the main point in the first line?
  • Is any sentence longer than about 20 words?
  • Is there a word I wasn't sure about when I wrote it?

Example, a message sent to a manager:

Hi Sir, as discussed about the project yesterday, I am sending the report. Kindly check and revert back.

Minutes 4–6: Fix it and find the pattern

Rewrite the message the way you wish you'd sent it. If you're not sure what's wrong, check it with a tool that explains the fix, or ask a colleague you trust.

Hi Anil, as we discussed yesterday, here's the project report. Could you check the figures on page 2 and let me know by Thursday?

Then name the mistakes, in a few words each:

  • discussed about → discussed (discuss takes no “about”)
  • revert back → let me know (clearer for readers outside India)
  • vague request → one action and a deadline

That's your learning for today. You can see more patterns like these in Indian English phrases at work and mistakes Spanish speakers make.

Minutes 7–8: Write the mistake log

Keep a short list in a notes app: the wrong version, the right version, one example sentence of your own. After a week, you'll see the same lines coming back. Those are your patterns, and they're the only grammar you need to study.

Wrong Right My sentence
discuss about discuss Let's discuss the budget on Monday.
since 3 years for 3 years I've worked here for 3 years.
I have a doubt I have a question I have a question about the invoice.

Minutes 9–10: Write one new message, using today's fix

Write two or three sentences you'll actually need this week, using the corrected pattern. A reply to a client, a message to your team, an update for your boss. Type it, don't just think it. Writing the right version yourself is what makes it stick.

Once a week (15 minutes)

  • Reread your mistake log. Cross out the mistakes you haven't made all week. Circle the ones still coming back.
  • Copy one good email. Find an email from a colleague or client whose English you like. Copy one paragraph by hand or by typing. Notice how they open, ask and close. This is how many writers learn the shape of natural English.
  • Rewrite one message in two tones. The same message, once more formal and once friendlier. It trains your ear for tone, which is where many non-native writers lose points at work. Our formal email templates are a good reference.

Five habits that make your writing clearer right away

  1. Put the point first. “The report is ready” before “As per our discussion last week regarding…”.
  2. One idea per sentence. If a sentence has three commas and an “and”, split it.
  3. Use plain words. Help instead of assist, start instead of commence, about instead of regarding. Plain is not less professional.
  4. End with a clear request. One action, one deadline.
  5. Read it aloud before you send. You'll hear the missing words and the sentence that runs too long.

What doesn't work as well

  • Long grammar lists. Reading “100 common mistakes” helps for a day. Fixing your own three mistakes helps for good.
  • Learning only from corrections you don't read. If a tool fixes your text silently, you never learn the rule. Read the reason, or look it up.
  • Writing only when you have to. Ten minutes every day beats an hour once a month.

How a tool can help (and where it can't)

A grammar checker shows you mistakes you'd never spot on your own. The good ones also tell you why. On Android, Lingently does the first part of this routine for you: it checks the message you're writing in WhatsApp, Gmail or Slack when you tap it, explains each fix in one line, and turns your fixes into short daily practice built from your own sentences, with a list of the patterns that keep coming back. See how it helps non-native writers.

What no tool can do is the writing itself. The ten minutes are yours.

Questions

How can I improve my English writing skills quickly?

Practise on your own real messages. Every day, reread one email or chat you sent, fix it, note the mistake, and write a new sentence using the right version. Because most people repeat the same few mistakes, this improves your writing faster than general grammar study.

How can I improve my English writing at work?

Put the main point first, keep sentences short, use plain words, and end every message with a clear request and a deadline. Then keep a log of your own mistakes and review it weekly.

Is reading enough to improve writing?

Reading helps you learn natural phrases, but it isn't enough on its own. You also need to write, get feedback on your own mistakes, and use the corrected version yourself.

How long does it take to improve English writing?

It depends on your level and how often you practise. Because you work on a short list of your own patterns, not all of English grammar, you can track progress in your mistake log: each week, count the lines you didn't need.

What is the best app to improve English writing?

Look for one that works where you already write, explains each correction instead of only fixing it, and helps you practise your own mistakes. On Android, Lingently does all three; see how it works.
