Lingently vs Grammarly

Two writing helpers that sit on top of your keyboard on Android. What each one does, what it costs, and which one fits you.

Last checked

Grammarly is the better choice if you want unlimited free spelling and grammar fixes while you type. Lingently is the better choice if English is your second language and you want to learn from your mistakes, for less money. On Android the two now work in a similar way: neither replaces your keyboard. Grammarly shows a small floating button that checks as you type. Lingently shows a floating character that checks your message when you tap it, explains each fix, and turns your fixes into daily practice.

Where Grammarly is better

  • A bigger free plan. Grammarly's free plan corrects spelling and grammar, and its plans page mentions no daily limit. Lingently's free plan has 5 checks a day.
  • It checks as you type. You see the number of suggestions before you finish. With Lingently, you tap when you're ready.
  • It's everywhere. Grammarly works in the browser, on Windows and Mac, and on iPhone, with one account. Lingently is built for your Android phone.
  • More for long writing. Pro adds plagiarism and AI-text detection and citation help, which matter for essays and reports.
  • More languages listed. Grammarly lists 23 writing languages on its site. Lingently checks five.

Where Lingently is better

  • It teaches, not just fixes. Every fix goes into short daily practice made from your own sentences. You also get a word bank and a view of the mistakes that keep coming back. The goal is that you need the app less over time.
  • Built for second-language writers. It's made for the mistakes people make when they translate from their own language: "I am agree", "I have 30 years", "we can discuss about it". See the ESL grammar checker page.
  • It only reads when you tap. Lingently reads the text field you're typing in, only that field, only when you tap. Never password fields or SMS. Your history stays on your phone.
  • It costs less. Pro is $47.99 a year, or $6.99 a month. Grammarly lists Pro at $12 a month on its site, and the in-app prices on its Play listing go from $29.99 to $139.99.
  • A trial with no card. Every new phone gets 14 days of Pro free. You don't enter payment details to start.

Which should you use?

  • English is your second language and you mostly write on your phone, in WhatsApp, Gmail or Slack, and you want to stop repeating the same mistakes: Lingently.
  • You also write in Spanish, French, German or Portuguese: both can help; Lingently checks those four plus English.

Questions

Is Grammarly a keyboard on Android?

Not anymore. Grammarly's Play listing says it works with any Android keyboard, such as Gboard or SwiftKey, and that its old Grammarly Keyboard was discontinued. Lingently also works with your own keyboard.

Can I use Grammarly and Lingently at the same time?

You can install both, but two floating buttons over the same text field get busy. Most people pick one for their phone.

Is there a Grammarly alternative for Android that explains mistakes?

Yes. Lingently explains every fix in one line, and then uses your fixes for short daily practice. Grammarly also explains its corrections. The difference is the practice: Lingently is built to help you learn, not only to fix.

Is Lingently cheaper than Grammarly?

Yes. Lingently Pro is $47.99 a year or $6.99 a month. Grammarly lists Pro at $12 a month on grammarly.com. Both have a free plan.
