Grammar check your emails in the Gmail app.

Write the email on your phone, tap the character, and get it back corrected, with one line on why. Then send it with confidence.

To grammar check an email in the Gmail app on Android, you can use Lingently. It floats over Gmail while you write. Tap the character, and it checks the email in the field you're typing in, shows each fix with a one-line reason, and puts the corrected text back when you tap Replace. You keep your own keyboard, and you don't copy anything.

Why email needs more than spell check

A chat can be casual. An email to a manager, a client, a landlord or a recruiter is read slowly, sometimes twice, and sometimes forwarded. Small mistakes stand out, and your keyboard's spell check doesn't see them, because every word is spelled right:

  • ✗ I am writing to ask about the position you published.
  • ✓ I am writing to ask about the position you advertised.
  • ✗ Please find attached the documents that you asked.
  • ✓ Please find attached the documents that you asked for.
  • ✗ I look forward to hear from you.
  • ✓ I look forward to hearing from you.
  • ✗ Sorry for the late, I was out of office.
  • ✓ Sorry for the late reply. I was out of the office.

How it works in Gmail

  1. Write your email in the Gmail app, in the body or the subject line.
  2. Tap the character at the edge of the screen. Lingently reads only the field you're typing in, only when you tap.
  3. Read the fixes. Each one is struck through and corrected, with the reason: after "look forward to", use the -ing form.
  4. Tap Replace. The corrected text goes back into your email.

It works the same way in Outlook and most other email apps, and in your browser.

Make it sound right, too (Pro)

Grammar is half the job. The other half is tone. On Pro, Lingently rewrites your email in a different tone: more formal for a first message to a client, friendlier for a colleague, or shorter when the point is buried in the third paragraph. The grammar fixes stay in. See the tone checker for examples.

Learn from your own emails

Every fix is saved. A few minutes a day, Lingently asks you to redo your own sentences, so "I look forward to hear from you" is something you fix once and then stop writing. You also see your patterns, like prepositions or verb forms, and which ones you've beaten.

What Lingently can see

  • Only the field you're typing in, and only when you tap. It doesn't read your inbox.
  • Your text is sent securely to be checked, then deleted.
  • Never password fields or SMS.
  • Nothing changes in your email until you tap Replace.
