Lingently vs LanguageTool

A strong multilingual checker for your computer, and a writing coach for your Android phone. Here's which one to use where.

Last checked

LanguageTool is the better choice on a computer, especially if you write in many languages. On an Android phone, Lingently is the more practical option, because LanguageTool lists no Android app. LanguageTool checks over 30 languages through browser add-ons, Word and Google Docs plugins, desktop apps and an iPhone app. Lingently is an Android app that floats over WhatsApp, Gmail and any other app, explains each fix in one line, and turns your mistakes into daily practice.

Where LanguageTool is better

  • Many more languages. Over 30, compared with Lingently's five. If you write in Dutch, Polish or Ukrainian, LanguageTool is the stronger pick.
  • Your computer. Browser add-ons for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera, plus plugins for Word and Google Docs. Lingently has none of these.
  • Long texts. Premium checks up to 150,000 characters in one text field, which is useful for reports and theses.
  • It checks as you type. In the browser and desktop apps, its suggestion cards appear while you write, with no tap needed.

Where Lingently is better

  • It's on Android. LanguageTool lists apps for Windows, Mac and iPhone, not Android. Lingently works inside the apps you use on your phone: WhatsApp, Gmail, Slack, LinkedIn. You keep your own keyboard.
  • It teaches. Every fix becomes short daily practice from your own sentences. You also get a word bank and see which mistakes keep coming back.
  • Made for chat and quick messages. You tap the character, see the fixes, and tap Replace. No copying text into a browser.
  • Tone in one tap. On Pro, make a message more formal for your boss, friendlier for a group chat, or shorter.

Which should you use?

  • You write long documents on a computer, or in many languages: LanguageTool.
  • You write in English as a second language, mostly on an Android phone: Lingently.
  • Both: that works well. LanguageTool for the laptop, Lingently for the phone.
